How is this related to the BiOS Initiative and open source?
Biological Open Source is not a new way of patenting, but it is a new way of sharing Freedom to (co-)Operate by maintaining capability to use technology (including patented technology, know-how, and improvements subject to patent applications), among multiple parties that agree to cooperate according to the terms of a BiOS license.
The Patent Lens tools are useful to help point to and protect this Freedom to (co-)Operate. Transparency around patents and understanding of what their claims cover is important to dispel "PatentFUD" (FUD is a widely used technical term): fears about investing in technology of interest, uncertainties about whether other licenses are needed, and doubts about where it is possible to invent around the claims without infringing them.
